Free-Motion Beginnings

Free-Motion Beginnings
Workshop with Christina Cameli
Class description: This class is a fun and gentle introduction to free-motion quilting on your home
machine. Let Christina introduce you to beginner-friendly designs while answering all the questions
you have about free-motion quilting. Students will get lots of stitching time with Christina's guidance
and encouragement, and walk away with a clear understanding of how to quilt their projects on a
domestic machine.
Experience level: Beginner to Intermediate
Sewing machine required: YES
Required supplies
Sewing machine: be sure the machine is clean and tuned. Please remember
your bobbin, foot pedal and power cord! Also bring the instructions for your
sewing machine if you have them.
Free motion foot or darning foot to fit your machine
Extension table for your sewing machine, if you have one
Thread (I recommend Aurifil 50 weight or Superior threads, choose a color
to contrast a bit with your fat quarters)
A fresh sewing machine needle (I recommend a Quilting needle, size 90/14)
Quilting gloves (I use Fons and Porter quilting gloves)
Curved basting pins (package of 100. Or, if you prefer, you can use spray
baste at home, but no spray basting in the classroom please.)
Small scissors
Temporary fabric marker
Notebook and pen for sketching quilting designs
Fabric (use one of each to make each practice quilt sandwich)
3 fat quarters (18" x 20" or so, solids are best for visibility)
3 pieces of batting 20” x 24” each
3 pieces of muslin 20” x 24” each
Optional supplies
Book: First Steps to Free-Motion Quilting by Christina Cameli.

Other considerations
Sometimes quilters need to sit up a little higher for comfortable free-motion
quilting. Bring a firm pillow (or a folded up quilt!) to sit on if you would like
this option.
I will demonstrate basting during class and give you time to baste in class as
well, but if you prefer you may baste your quilt sandwiches at home. Most
quilters use 2 practice quilt sandwiches in the class but some will use all 3.
Consider bringing water and a snack.
Feel free to bring a quilt top you would like advice on quilting!

Instructor Bio: Christina Cameli has endeared herself to fans all over the world through her quilting books and Craftsy classes. Christina's gentle, supportive spirit is equally suited to teaching quilting and her career as a nurse-midwife. As a fabric designer for Maywood Studio and non-stop quilt designer, she is never bored. Christina finds her greatest joys with scrappy patchwork, free-motion quilting and wedge based piecing. Outside of the sewing room and the clinic, she spends her days with her blended family and rescue lab mix in Portland Oregon, trying to get in an afternoon paddle boarding when she can.
