Embroidering Text

A name on a Christmas stocking, an initial on a handkerchief, a message in a fabric journal?  There are lots of reasons to add text to your projects and lots of ways to do it.  We will use your handwriting for a start.  Practice small block letters.  Skinny letters and chunkier ones.

Balanced spacing and straight lines are two tricks that add polish.

This is not a project class.  We will work on techniques you can use in many ways.  Do think of a couple of words with four to six letters you may want to play with.

Supplies:

  1. You may use supplies you have, or supplies will be available the day of class with a 10% discount.
  2. 10" to 12" square of fabric.  Solid color or muted print.  Quilter's cotton, muslin, or linen are good choices.  This is for a sample.  It should not be something precious.
  3. A hoop sized for your fabric
  4. A removeable pen or pencil designed for use on fabric.   I like water or air erase.
  5. Needles:  Recommend a Chenille #22 or #24
  6. Thread:  Size 8 and 12 Pearl Cotton, 6-strand cotton embroidery thread.  Colors should contrast with your fabric
  7. A small, clear ruler.  I like a 1 x 6"
  8. A stitch dictionary

Feel free to bring a sack lunch or snack to energize you through this class.  We will provide coffee, tea, and bottled water.
